Labrador City is the iron ore capital of the world. Most of the world's iron ore is mined in Labrador City and Wabush. In 1996, the Iron Ore Company of Canada celebrated the one billion tonne of ore mined. The mine opened in 1958 and Labrador City was incorporated as a community three years later.
