Historic Attractions & Museums - Elliston

Five miles from Bonavista is the small town of Elliston which was once called "Bird Island Cove," because of the numerous islands occupied by birds. The name was common in the 1600's when migratory West Country fishermen first came to Trinity Bay. The Bird Island Cove name was taken from the small islands, North and South Bird Island, which is close to some of the most excellent fishing grounds in Newfoundland. In 1902, it was changed to Elliston in honour and in memory of its first pioneer Methodist Preacher Rev. William Ellis.
