Street United Church

| Gower Street
United Church (formerly Methodist) was established in 1815. The present
church building was opened in 1896. The fourth building for the
congregation and the third on the present site, it was built to replace
its predecessor which was burned in the fire that destroyed much of St.
John's in 1892. Its basic architectural features have remained largely
unchanged and include an impressive hammerbeam roof of pitch pine and
ornate iron grillwork. In recent years over 50 strained glass windows have
been installed. In 1996 Gower Street United Church was designated as a
Registered Historic Structure. |
