Parks and Campgrounds - Rocky Harbour
The community of Rocky Harbour, located between the two prominent
landmarks, Salmon Point and Lobster Cove Head, at the northern entrance to the
beautiful Bonne Bay on the west coast of Newfoundland gets its name from the
reef of rocks at the entrance to the harbour. The settlement consisted of five
major areas which eventually expanded all around the harbour. As early as 1809,
it is recorded, Mr. John Paine and his wife Sarah lived in Rocky Harbour Cove.
1891 saw the first church, the Church of England, and in 1898 the
first school was built. As the village expanded other churches and schools
were built and today there are six churches and a modern ten classroom
elementary school, with grade VII to level III children going to Holland's
Memorial High School at Norris Point.
Rocky Harbour encompasses the offices and headquarters of the Gros
Morne National Park. The community offers high quality tourist facilities,
including a modern, heated swimming pool, in an ultra modern Recreation
Complex.
