Ship Harbour - Newfoundland and Labrador

Coordinates: 47.3608° N, 53.9166° W

Ship Harbour is a historic little community located northeast of Argentia and about 138 km from St. John's and 27 km from the Argentia Ferry. Ship Harbour was first mentioned as a separate community in 1874 with a population of 33.

Ship Harbour is known for it's beautiful scenery. It is surrounded by wooded hills with many paths and a large and deep inlet settled on it's north western shore. A walk through the trails of the Sugar Loaf Hill will give you a breathtaking view of the entire landscape.

Ship Harbour plays an important role in history as it was an anchoring area for many naval ships during the Second World War. Some very important ships secretly anchored there in 1941 and some very important decisions were made there with respect to the war. In fact, Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt met there in 1941 and drafted the Atlantic Charter.

A monument was erected near the community in 1976 to commemorate the event, and the fiftieth anniversary of the Atlantic Charter was marked in 1991 with a public ceremony. The construction of the American Naval Base at Argentia during World War II employed many of the people of Ship Harbour and the harbour was occasionally used as an ammunition-handling berth.
