Witless Bay Ecological Reserve

Thousands of seabirds...soaring, nesting, feeding...a cacophony of sound, crashing waves, refreshing ocean breezes, and spectacular coastal scenery.. all this and more is yours to experience at Witless Bay Seabird Ecological Reserve

This province has one of the largest concentrations of seabirds in the world. Every year, millions of seabirds leave the open ocean and come to land to breed.

A visit to the reserve is a breathtaking encounter with a variety of seabird species. It has the largest Atlantic Puffin colony in North America, and the second largest Leach Storm Petrel colony in the world!

The caplin run from about mid-June to mid-July. Seabirds, whales and fishermen are all in pursuit of the tiny fish, this is an exciting time to visit the reserve. Although the Islands are too sensitive to tolerate human presence, local tour boat operators offer a thrilling tour around the islands where you may see many of the seabird species and quite possibly whales.
