At the end of Route 480 is beautiful Burgeo.
One of the largest towns on the coast, it can
also be reached by coastal boat from
Rose Blanche on
Route 470. Burgeo is built on an island and
connected to the province by a short causeway.
The sheltered harbour contributed to a fishing
industry so prosperous that in the 1940s a fish
processing facility was built and the population
grew. It wasn't until the cod moratorium of 1992
that Burgeo, like so many rural towns, began
experience substantial out migration. Families,
young men and young women left to find work.
Years later, the fishery remains a part of
life in Burgeo. On sunny summer days the boats
moored in the harbour rock gently, their images
perfectly mirrored in the sea. Amble along a
wharf; chat with a local fisherman, or take in
the Sand and Sea Festival held annually at
Sandbanks Provincial Park. The park boasts seven kilometres of sandy beaches to rival any in
Florida.
Outside
the park hike to the top of Maiden Tea Hill to
experience a unique view of the town. Step back
in time at the Burgeo Museum. Visit the War
Memorial, Seaman's Monument, or any of the local
cemeteries to trace the town's colourful past.
From Burgeo, sail via coastal boat to
Ramea,
Grey River,
Francois and Macallum.
