Rocky Harbour - Newfoundland and Labrador
Incorporated as a
town in 1966, Rocky Harbour was used sometimes
as by the French in the migratory fishery,
although it was not one of their major harbours.
In the 1820s, John Payne settled here. The first
census taken in 1874 showed a population of 35.
By the 1990s, the population had risen to 125.
In 1921, there were 17 lobster factories, salmon
was being smoked, cod-liver oil was being
produced, as well as the packaging of herring.
In 1973, families from re-settled communities
within the
Gros Morne National Park were placed
in Rocky Harbour. More services were established
in the community because of the increased
population. With the opening of the park,
tourism has become a major source of employment.
